Our History

Established in 1974, the Nurses' and Midwives' Training College, Tamale, has a rich history marked by a dedication to healthcare education in Ghana. From humble beginnings with eighteen students, we have grown to become a leading institution in healthcare education.

NMTC History

From 18 Students to 1,845+

Our college began in 1974 with just eighteen students and three classrooms. Today, we house over 1,845 students across multiple healthcare programs, representing five decades of educational excellence and infrastructure development.

The Early Years (1974-1999)

In its inaugural year, the college welcomed eighteen students into the professional nursing program. Operating with limited resources, the institution functioned with just three classrooms, a library, and separate housing arrangements. Female students resided in a two-story hostel, while male students found accommodation in the "White House" near Tamale Central Hospital.

Evolution of Programs

The college's mission has steadily evolved since its inception. Initially focused on training Enrolled Nurses, the institution progressively expanded to train Qualified Registered Nurses (QRNs) and later, State Registered Nurses (SRNs).

A pivotal moment arrived in 1999 with the introduction of the Registered General Nurses (RGN) Diploma program, marking a significant advancement in the qualifications offered.

Midwifery Excellence

In 2009, the college became one of the select few institutions in Ghana accredited to train Registered Midwives (RM) through a Diploma program. This was further enhanced in 2018 with accreditation for the Post NAC/NAP Midwifery program.

This "dual mandate" of training both nurses and midwives positions the college as a leader in healthcare education within Ghana and beyond.

Curriculum Development

The college adopted the Comprehensive Nursing curriculum in 1974, with student cohorts designated as C1, C2, and so forth. The transition to the Diploma program in 1999 introduced the D-series designation, currently reaching D26. The Diploma Midwifery (DM) program has grown to DM15, reflecting our continued expansion and commitment to excellence.

Today and Beyond

Today, the Nurses' and Midwives' Training College, Tamale, boasts a vibrant student population exceeding 1,845 students pursuing various healthcare programs. This impressive growth is complemented by significant advancements in infrastructure, ensuring a conducive learning environment for aspiring nurses and midwives. Our journey stands as a demonstration of our solid commitment to nurturing future generations of caregivers in Ghana and abroad.
